Introduction and Course Documents: Late Medieval Period in Europe-2

This week we return to Europe to discuss societal changes in the late Medieval Period (1000-1500 CE).  From the rise of knights and feudal serfs to the Black Death and modern state formation these 500 years represented a dramatic period of reorganization in Europe. The church and state vied for primacy in peoples lives and their proverbial checkbooks. Cities once again began to pop up throughout Western Europe and social stratification accelerated as nobility began to rapidly acquire wealth due to increased trade and commodification.  The period culminates with the Renaissance--a return to the Classics in art and literature.  This neoclassic style ushered in a dramatic transition from the Gothic style that had dominated much of the Middle Ages.
